Childproofing Your Home: A Room-by-Room Safety Guide
Once babies start crawling and toddlers start exploring, every room becomes a new world of curiosity. A few simple safety measures can prevent many common household accidents.
Get Down to Their Level
Crawl around your home and look at it from your child’s viewpoint. You will quickly notice cords, sharp corners, and small objects you might otherwise miss.
Living Room
- Anchor bookcases, TVs, and heavy furniture to the wall
- Use corner guards on sharp table edges
- Cover unused electrical outlets
- Keep small objects, batteries, and coins out of reach
Kitchen
- Install cabinet locks on cupboards with cleaning products
- Turn pot handles inward while cooking
- Keep knives and appliances well out of reach
Bathroom
- Never leave a young child alone in or near water
- Store medicines and toiletries in a locked cabinet
- Use non-slip mats in the tub and on the floor
- Set the water heater to a safe temperature
Bedroom
- Follow safe sleep guidelines for infants
- Keep cords from blinds out of reach
- Use window guards or stops above ground level
Stairs and Doors
Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs, and consider door-knob covers for rooms that should stay off limits.
Review Regularly
As your child grows, new risks appear. Re-check your home every few months and adjust your safety measures accordingly.
Childproofing is not about removing every risk; it is about creating a safe environment where children can explore and learn with confidence.
